Yoga is protective and enlivening.
Freeing you from habitual patterns of tension, this yoga creates a sense of spaciousness within, dissolves stress, strengthens core muscles, joint health, centeredness, postural alignment and groundedness, increases breath capacity and breath awareness, shifts stagnant emotions into movement and release, and is attentive to the subtle stuff of the mind, helping to free us from the driving forces of unconscious actions and thoughts.

11/4 Doctoral Dissertation Oral Defense of Shaofei Liu
Doctoral Dissertation Oral Defense of Shaofei Liu
Monday, November 4th, 20241:00 PM - 2:00 PM OtherAdenocarcinoma stage dynamics: from stroma transition and tumor-hypoxia to genetic mutations
doctoral field of study: Biomedical Engineering(BME)
Cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) are prominent and abundant cells in the stroma of adenocarcinoma. They exert both antitumorigenic and protumorigenic effects on tumor cells during stage progression, depending on the organ or context, making them potential targets for cancer treatment. Hypoxia affects both stroma and tumor cells, with a stronger impact on the latter. It leads to dysfunctional vascularization and can cause metastasis through epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT), as well as contribute to therapy resistance. Genetic alterations drive the invasion-metastasis cascade, working in tandem with non-genetic changes in tumor cells. Both genetic and non-genetic factors contribute to tumor formation and subsequent invasion-metastasis, further strengthened by the stroma. However, there is limited knowledge about how stroma, hypoxia, and mutation-derived cell types change with tumor stage progression.
This thesis research project focuses on understanding how CAFs in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), tumor hypoxia in adenocarcinoma, and mutation-derived cancer cells in lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) undergo dynamic changes across different stages as cancer progresses. My results demonstrate that: (i) CAFs transition from an early-stage tumor-resistant type to a late-stage tumor-supportive function in PDAC; (ii) LUAD exhibits a different HIF1A activation pattern compared to PDAC and colorectal cancer (CRC), with HIF-1 activation associated with higher rates of metastatic spread in LUAD; (iii) L858R and del19 mutations have distinctly different phenotypes in late stages—L858R tumors are less metastatic but have stronger tumor cell viability compared to del19 tumors, and both are controlled by specific cell groups that determine their phenotype. These studies provide a time-spanning approach to clarify previously understudied stage dynamics in cancer research. This work will enable targeted approaches to CAFs, hypoxia-related therapies, and mutation-specific treatments for specific tumor types.Contact Information:name: Shaofei Liu

11/4 Barbershop
Barbershop
Monday, November 4th, 20243:00 PM - 4:00 PM Arjona BuildingBarbershop
The “Barbershop Group” is a therapy group for men who have had past traumatic experiences and would like to learn new ways of coping and managing the effects of that trauma. The group recognizes the need for men to develop different skills that will effectively improve how we express our emotions and build relationships in a safe space. What better place to do that than the barbershop? The Barbershop model is derived from the “Men’s Trauma Recovery and Empowerment Model”- (M-TREM.) The Barbershop Group uses a Psycho-educational and skills-oriented approach that is person-centered. Over the years The Barbershop has provided men with a safe, non-judgmental setting where they can speak freely and be themselves. Unfortunately, we will not be providing haircuts, but we will be providing open discussion where honest responses in group discussions are encouraged, and we will engage in several exercises that are used to introduce you to and try new coping skills. I look forward to seeing you all at “The Shop”.

Dungeon’s and Therapy
Monday, November 4th, 20243:00 PM - 4:30 PM Arjona BuildingDungeon’s and Therapy
Role-playing games like Dungeons & Dragons, Pathfinder, and Quest allow participants to take on the persona of fictional characters and to complete daring adventures across mysterious worlds. This therapy group takes the core elements of these games but also challenges you to set goals that will help change your behavior, attitude, and mindset in the real world.
In Dungeons & Therapy, you will work with a mental health clinician to create a fantasy character that is personalized to you and your goals. This character might excel at something with which you struggle, be the complete opposite of who you are, or be designed to help you emphasize any given attribute. Within sessions of Dungeons & Therapy, you will interact with other players not only to find treasures, solve puzzles, and converse with enigmatic individuals - but also to express meaningful parts of yourself.
No previous experience with Dungeons & Dragons or any other RPG is required.

“Multi-Messenger Constraints on Supermassive Black Hole Binaries.”
The nanohertz gravitational wave background (GWB) is thought to be dominated by gravitational waves (GWs) from supermassive black hole binaries (SMBHBs), which result from galaxy mergers.
Quasars have long been associated with galaxy mergers, suggesting a link with SMBHBs.
In this work we constrain the SMBHB population using observations of the GWB, quasars, and galaxies.Contact Information:Please contact J. Andrew Casey-Clyde at andrew.casey-clyde@uconn.edu for further details.

11/8 Therapeutic Yoga
Therapeutic Yoga
Friday, November 8th, 202412:00 PM - 12:45 PM Arjona BuildingTherapeutic Yoga skillfully blends movement and breathwork, with a meditative focus for a full body practice that calms, nurtures, strengthens and opens one into flexibility of body and mind.
You’ll practice yogic techniques that you can bring into your everyday experience for simply living a good day, and for increasing your capacity to be creatively present in your life. A yogic attitude toward self and practice is one of kindness, patience, and tenderness. We grow into our best selves in an inner atmosphere of loving care.

Barbershop
Monday, November 11th, 20243:00 PM - 4:00 PM Arjona BuildingBarbershop

Monday, November 11th, 20243:00 PM - 4:30 PM Arjona BuildingDungeon’s and Therapy

11/14 Doctoral Dissertation Oral Defense of John Campanelli
Doctoral Dissertation Oral Defense of John Campanelli
Thursday, November 14th, 202412:00 PM - Young BuildingJohn Campanelli
PhD Candidate
Major Advisor: Julia KuzovkinaAbstract
In 2016, New England state Departments of Transportation (DOTs) adopted more sustainable practices for revegetating roadsides using native plant communities (NPC) rather than turfgrass. However, these DOTs have faced significant impediments to implementing these new protocols, including the inability to develop seed mixes that result in ecologically sound NPCs, struggles to conduct conservation mowing regimens that foster healthy NPCs, and a lack of genetically appropriate ecotypic plant material. Applying a mixed-method integrative approach that considers ecological, economic, political, social, and cultural factors, this study examines how to conduct extension outreach to non-scientist clients, communicating complex environmental issues and developing data-informed, user-friendly solutions. Focus groups and surveys were used to collect qualitative data regarding DOT real needs and obstacles to implementing complicated, more labor-intensive revegetation practices. Traditional research methods, such as common gardens, literature review, and expert consultation, were used to develop seed mixes appropriate for roadside soil profiles that would maximize ecosystem services. Case studies in multiple states were used to conduct immersive, participatory research to explore potential barriers to roadside revegetation. As part of efforts to increase and accelerate New England ecotypic seed production by coordinating supply-chain activities, roundtable discussions were utilized as boundary objects with stakeholders in fields that use and produce native plant material, resulting in the establishment of the Northeast Seed Network. All these components were developed in the framework of an iterative dialogic relationship with DOT managers, culminating in user-oriented tools and recommendations for New England DOTs to implement revegetation practices more easily and effectively.Contact Information: More

11/18 Barbershop
Barbershop
Monday, November 18th, 20243:00 PM - 4:00 PM Arjona BuildingBarbershop
To join this group therapy session, please call SHaW at 860-486-4705.
This session is held by Greg Davis, LPC
For many concerns that students face – like overwhelming stress, anxiety, difficult relationships, depression, academic difficulties, and more – group therapy is the best option for support and healing. Facilitated by Student Health and Wellness (SHaW) counselors, our therapy groups encourage peer support, promote emotional wellbeing, and increase a felt sense of connection. Participants often find that they feel less alone in their struggles, and walk away with newfound support and ideas for coping.

11/18 Dungeon’s and Therapy
Dungeon’s and Therapy
Monday, November 18th, 20243:00 PM - 4:30 PM Arjona BuildingDungeon’s and Therapy
To join this group therapy session, please call SHaW at 860-486-4705.

11/22 Therapeutic Yoga
Therapeutic Yoga
Friday, November 22nd, 202412:00 PM - 12:45 PM Arjona BuildingTherapeutic Yoga skillfully blends movement and breathwork, with a meditative focus for a full body practice that calms, nurtures, strengthens and opens one into flexibility of body and mind.

11/25 Barbershop
Barbershop
Monday, November 25th, 20243:00 PM - 4:00 PM Arjona BuildingBarbershop
To join this group therapy session, please call SHaW at 860-486-4705.

Dungeon’s and Therapy
Monday, November 25th, 20243:00 PM - 4:30 PM Arjona BuildingDungeon’s and Therapy
