3/3 Gentle Therapeutic Yoga
Gentle Therapeutic Yoga
Monday, March 3rd, 20252:30 PM - 3:30 PM Arjona Building
Yoga is protective and enlivening.
Freeing you from habitual patterns of tension, this yoga creates a sense of spaciousness within, dissolves stress, strengthens core muscles, joint health, centeredness, postural alignment and groundedness, increases breath capacity and breath awareness, shifts stagnant emotions into movement and release, and is attentive to the subtle stuff of the mind, helping to free us from the driving forces of unconscious actions and thoughts.
You’ll practice yogic techniques that you can bring into your everyday experience for simply living a good day, and for increasing your capacity to be creatively present in your life. A yogic attitude toward self and practice is one of kindness, patience, and tenderness. We grow into our best selves in an inner atmosphere of loving care.
Open to all UConn students, faculty and staff from any campus. No experience required.

3/3 Group Therapy: Barbershop
Group Therapy: Barbershop
Monday, March 3rd, 20253:00 PM - 4:00 PM Arjona Building
Barbershop
The “Barbershop Group” is a therapy group for men who have had past traumatic experiences and would like to learn new ways of coping and managing the effects of that trauma. The group recognizes the need for men to develop different skills that will effectively improve how we express our emotions and build relationships in a safe space. What better place to do that than the barbershop? The Barbershop model is derived from the “Men’s Trauma Recovery and Empowerment Model”- (M-TREM.) The Barbershop Group uses a Psycho-educational and skills-oriented approach that is person-centered. Over the years The Barbershop has provided men with a safe, non-judgmental setting where they can speak freely and be themselves. Unfortunately, we will not be providing haircuts, but we will be providing open discussion where honest responses in group discussions are encouraged, and we will engage in several exercises that are used to introduce you to and try new coping skills. I look forward to seeing you all at “The Shop”.
To join this group therapy session, please call SHaW at 860-486-4700.
This session is held by Greg Davis, LPC
For many concerns that students face – like overwhelming stress, anxiety, difficult relationships, depression, academic difficulties, and more – group therapy is the best option for support and healing. Facilitated by Student Health and Wellness (SHaW) counselors, our therapy groups encourage peer support, promote emotional wellbeing, and increase a felt sense of connection. Participants often find that they feel less alone in their struggles, and walk away with newfound support and ideas for coping.

3/3 El Poder de las Historias y los Testimonios: Learning from the Lived Experiences of Latina Superintendents
El Poder de las Historias y los Testimonios: Learning from the Lived Experiences of Latina Superintendents
Monday, March 3rd, 20254:30 PM -While the number of Latino/a students attending America’s public schools continues to increase, little research has taken place on Latina superintendents and their leadership. Of the limited studies that do exist, most are qualitative studies of the experiences of Latina superintendents in the Midwest and Southwest through the lens of women scholars (Manuel & Slate, 2003; Mendez-Morse, 2004; Quilantan & Menchaca-Ochoa, 2004). This study uses the methodology of testimonios to examine the underrepresentation of Latina superintendents in the northeast.

3/10 Doctoral Dissertation Oral Defense of Matthew A. Bizer
Doctoral Dissertation Oral Defense of Matthew A. Bizer
Monday, March 10th, 202512:00 PM - 2:00 PM Castleman BuildingAbstract:
Critical infrastructure systems face challenges to their present and future operations from climate change and variability, aging infrastructure, and population and regulatory changes. We know factors related to human dimensions of resilience help explain why managers adapt and build resilience to these challenges (or do not), but we lack understanding of how resilience-building efforts, which require transformation, change over time, and how external factors affect these efforts and changes. I employ quantitative and qualitative methods to trace and assess adaptation efforts, resilience, and potential transformation in critical infrastructure systems over time.
In combined sewer systems (CSS), I propose and validate a critical rainfall intensity threshold and a multiple linear regression model as new performance indicators for small municipalities adapting CSS to present challenges, using Cumberland, Maryland as a case study. These indicators track year-to-year changes in combined sewer overflow incidence and volume. This performance-based model may also help establish baseline projections for future climate impacts on CSS, from which adaptations can be considered.
In a statewide study of Rhode Island’s public wastewater sector, I analyze longitudinal data from semi-structured interviews with event history calendars (EHCs) to trace adaptations and decision-making processes over 13 years (2010-2023). The application of EHCs to study change processes in built infrastructure is novel. I use EHCs to track adaptations and capacities for (and barriers to) resilience and transformation. Then, I categorize systems at different segments of time by their level of transformative adaptation, and use capacities, barriers, and contextual variables as predictors of progressing to a more transformative category. I find that an organizational culture that values change and learning is the most significant predictor of progress toward transformation, especially when reinforced by supportive buy-in and interlinkages across levels of governance that provide funding, updated information, and networks of essential collaborators that help spur adaptation. While most scholars argue adaptive management can drive transformation, my results suggest adaptive management may actually perpetuate incremental change. Other common barriers to adaptation are those that disrupt multilevel governance. Eliminating organizational silos and path-dependencies, lowering thresholds for action, and multilevel and cross-institutional collaboration enable more transformative adaptation. Beyond individual systems, advancing transformation to advance resilience requires comprehensive planning, improving funding availability and supply chain resilience, and leveraging networks through multilevel governance collaborations.

3/10 Group Therapy: Barbershop
Group Therapy: Barbershop
Monday, March 10th, 20253:00 PM - 4:00 PM Arjona Building

3/17 Gentle Therapeutic Yoga
Gentle Therapeutic Yoga
Monday, March 17th, 20252:30 PM - 3:30 PM Arjona Building

3/17 Group Therapy: Barbershop
Group Therapy: Barbershop
Monday, March 17th, 20253:00 PM - 4:00 PM Arjona Building

Group Therapy: Barbershop
Monday, March 24th, 20253:00 PM - 4:00 PM Arjona Building

3/27 Doctoral Dissertation Oral Defense of Ian Sands
Doctoral Dissertation Oral Defense of Ian Sands
Thursday, March 27th, 202510:30 AM - 12:30 PMAbstract:
Novel nanomaterial design and implementation have driven the evolution of biological interfacing research over the past decade. With a growing interest in new nanomaterials for coatings and composite-based scaffolds, families of nanomaterial interfaces have formed based on their chemical, physical, and electrochemical properties. This includes carbon-based, polymer-based, and biologically-inspired nanomaterials that all aim to enhance cell integration, attenuate immune response, improve electrical conductivity, promote bioactivity, or a combination of these therapeutic properties. In recent years, versatile materials such as carbon nanotubes (CNTs), conductive polymers (CPs), and organic biomaterials have been leveraged across multiple complex tissue interfaces, interacting with various cell types as regeneration scaffolds or interface coatings. Although the versatility of these nanomaterials has been well documented, many current coatings and scaffolds address only a portion of the challenges that a biological interface presents, which limits their therapeutic potential. Due to the nuanced nature of tissue interfaces, traditional nanomaterials lack the customizability and specificity required to address the biocompatibility, bioactivity, and functional requirements of multiple tissue interfaces. Herein lies the incentive that drives the development of novel and versatile nanomaterial-based scaffolds capable of targeting the specific requirements of different tissue interfaces. This work pursues the characterization and application of Janus Base Nanomaterials (JBNs), a novel family of versatile and biologically-inspired molecules predicated on DNA-base chemistry. Janus Base Nanotubes (JBNts) offer a unique chemical structure that enables π-π electron-mediated conductivity, electrostatic biomolecule encapsulation, and a wide range of outfacing amino acid groups for improved cell binding. This chemistry promotes JBNts as a proper multifunctional bioactive substrate for cell interactions across multiple tissue interfaces. To investigate the bioactive versatility of JBNts, we developed and implemented JBNts as 1) a bioactive matrix scaffold for stem cell differentiation and cartilage tissue regeneration and 2) an electrically conductive interface for stimulation and recording applications. Utilizing the conductive and bioactive properties of JBNt, we improved upon the current limitations of cartilage regeneration scaffolds and bioelectronic interface coatings, demonstrating the true multifunctional capabilities of JBNts.Contact Information: More

All Recovery Meetings
Friday, March 28th, 20255:00 PM - 6:00 PM Cordial Storrs House
An All Recovery meeting is ‘non-denominational’ meaning all pathways of recovery are embraced here. A universal recovery topic is chosen and then the group discusses it. It is not affiliated with any “Anonymous” program although you are likely to hear comments associated with 12 step fellowships. Meetings are facilitated by a student member of the URC with support from a Recovery Coach and are held both in-person and online for students from other UConn campuses.
